Genetically Modified Foods are really damaging and they create chaos in our health. The Institute for Responsible Technology (IRT) released a report that links GMF to disorders created by gluten.

Many scientists agree that the exponential increase of the disorders relating to gluten is not explained only by genetics, thus thinking that there was some environmental reason that is the factor of this outcome.

Gluten sensitivity affects more than 18 million Americans.

The authors are linking GMO foods to 5 conditions which can worsen or trigger disorders related to gluten and they base this on medical journal reviews, U.S. Dept. of Agriculture data, Environmental Protection Act records, and international research.

These 5 conditions are the following:
  • Immune initiation and allergic response
  • Weakened digestion
  • Intestinal permeability
  • Imbalanced bacteria in the gut
  • Harm to the intestinal wall

Currently, there are 9 GMO food crops that are being grown for commercial use and those are corn, cotton (oil), canola (oil), soy, sugar from sugar beets, yellow squash, zucchini, alfalfa, and Hawaiian papaya.

Most of these crops are made to tolerate glyphosate which is a weed killer. High amounts of this toxin still remain in the crops when they are harvested.

Cotton and corn are also genetically modified to produce Bt-toxin which is a type of insecticide.

Jeffrey Smith, the Executive Director of the Institute for Responsible Technology states that the Bt-toxin is made in order to puncture holes in the cells of the insects.

However, he adds that this can also happen with human cells as well which can lead to leaky gut, a condition that is common with patients that are sensitive to gluten.

Senior Research Scientist at MIT, Stephanie Seneff states that glyphosate is a patented antibiotic which kills the beneficial gut bacteria and causes an imbalance of gut flora.

The imbalance is really common in Celiac Disease and additional diseases related to gluten.

Additionally, scientists have found that Bt-toxins that are found in Monsanto crops can potentially cause leukemia by damaging blood cells.

An additional study shows that the GMO animal feed can lead to extreme stomach inflammation and enlarged uteri in pigs. It has also been linked to cancer and a number of other diseases.

Scientists press to create a ban on GMOs. Many people in North America protest the GMO usage and many public figures are also speaking up to get the awareness of this situation.

Dr. Thierry Vrain, a former Canadian Government Scientist at Agriculture Canada is one of these people that spoke against the GMOs.

The geneticist David Suzuki is another big public figure who has fought against GMOs for a long time and has expressed the extent to which GMOs can harm human health and the environment as well.

He also expressed that the consumption of these foods makes us as human beings participants in a big experiment.

Dr. Tom O’Bryan, an expert on gluten sensitivity and Celiac Disease, has expressed himself that GMOs might be the reason for the quick rise in disorders related to gluten in the last few decades.

Emily Linder, MD, says that she agrees that the GMOs are a big reason for the rising of the gluten sensitive population in the US and she removes the genetically modified foods from her patients’ treatments in order for them to recover completely and quickly.

Until now, spreading the awareness is paying off since many places in the world banned GMO foods and hopefully, we can push forward with this matter.

However, we will never be safe unless GMOs are completely banned and seize to exist, and that is why we should keep on fighting and keep spreading the awareness of what GMOs can do to us.
